Politics, Technology, & ‘Change’ (basically the same as my below Post)

September 11, 2008

Posted this at RED Cameras forum…thought I would repost it in my blog:

Dont know, reminds me to much of American politics.
You are led to believe that there is a difference in the ‘parties’, (i.e. Dems/Repubs, etc.) but at heart its much of the same.

Same with the DSLR market.
Sony is God over it, even though it looks like Canon rules the roost.
After all, there is always that one feature which would have made the leap over all the other cameras which gets left out.

What one camera doesnt have, (and could easily have had), the other has.
Much like Sonys low end DSLR market where they give you 3 cameras around the same price, but missing functionality here and there.

The above applies to Canon, Nikon and Sony as a whole.
This one misses that, but another one, priced a bit higher has what the other brand didnt, and so forth.

No one is going anywhere and with them the market is stuck.

From how I understand it, Sony supplies the ‘big’ canon lord of DSLRs with chips for the canon video cameras. Something most DSLR owners appear not to know as they think Sony is about ‘games’ only.

Also, Sony give Nikon chips for the DSLRs.
Yes, you may say Nikon designs and Sony makes.
You would think after years of doing that they would have a clue of how to make their own chips work as good if not better than Nikon.

So Sony feeds into Canon (albeit on the video side, which is more hidden to those who worship Canon) and then Nikon on the photography side.

No matter how the fine details all connect, the point is simple.
Neither company has the incentive or reason to blow the other out of the water.

Neither of the 3 companies – Sony, Canon, Nikon, will ever wipe one or the other off the face of the map, as they are to close in business as it is.
Its more like the political landscape of America, as pointed out in the beginning of the post.

Now here comes RED.
So far everything they have been about and shown is pretty progressive.
Reminds me of Apple and what they used to stand for…quality and progressive technology.

Now its not as progressive…(would take time to explain where Im coming from), and the quality control issues are really obvious when you watch the history of some of their products…as a former Apple fan boy I missed a lot of this, but that is because it takes time with a product to see its trends.

Dont get me wrong, I still own Apple and plan to upgrade soon to a new system if they can work out certain quarks with Nvidia and the laptop screen issues, etc. ;)
Outwardly they represent change…still pretty objects, though going from metal to the cracking iphone plastic…well…
reminds me of Obamas call for change and then he hires an insider as V.P.

Point is, all of this – from politics to products we buy, represent where we are as a collective mass…or rather where our collective thinking is.

We are on the verge of greatness in this world. (look at the cooperation it took to get CERN up and running), but we still have the sillyness which holds us back. (Look at the Russia, Georgia, U.S. bit.) And on a lower scale what corporations do…leak out technology to make sure they have something to sale you years down the road.

Its an old model and an old way of thinking.

I have said a bit, and a lot would need more of an explanation as words are really easy to misunderstand as we interpret it through our mental grid system which was built up by our surrounding milieu. ;)

But here is to RED…the concept is great…they have the momentum…will they stay on top and continue what they started? Or will they become the superficial change which is sweet on the outside, but starts tearing down and breaking form the cheaper parts they use?

As of now, its looking good. So I cant wait to see Scarlet and this new DSLR.

My apologies for my long bit of babbling. ;)

Peace

Sony, Canon, Nikon, & RED

September 11, 2008

Just a post I made in a photography forum…enjoy.

I dont know…I think you can.

Think about it this way:

Sony supplies Canon with their video chips. ;)
(At least from how I understood it, who knows whats happening these days.)
As we all know Canon only recently has made a small entry in the broadcast field…more so for lower budget studios and independents.

Sony supplies chips to Nikon for the still photography – who cares if Nikon designs it…Sony is still in there.

Point is… how can there be a true war on anything if all 3 companies have some pretty deep ties? (of course the video side is easy for most to forget on this board, but still.)

If you notice what happens, no one switches…if anything its enough that each side keeps to their brand loyalty and puts down the next brand.

Sony knew what would happen. You cant be that naive to announce something that far in advance an not think about this. And being the ruler of broadcast video (along with panasonic) you cant expect me to believe that Canon has the superior technology and wits to come up with this integration idea.

No, not at all. :)

Indeed I believe Red camera is spurring all of this.
Yes, that little unheard of company outside of its cinema influence…but growing ever so quickly by word of mouth.

They have a camera coming out next year that will shoot 3k video for only $3k.
For those out there not familiar with video, this makes HD look like a toddler. ;)
(This is not mentioning their 4.5 and 5k cameras…of course more pricey, but a lot cheaper than what was out there for over 100k and some cameras which…in hollywood…you can only rent. – as they would never make enough money to just sell one or two to a studio…the only ones who could afford such a camera.)

And what of this camera from Red called scarlet? It will also do photography stills.
But that isnt the biggy.

The biggy is what I pointed out in the post above, that they are now going to precisely make a dslr killer. – towards the end of next year.

One could read this as an advance notice from nikon/canon(with sony as their puppet master, as they supply chips, whether it be still camera or video to both brands mentioned) that they are prepping for the changes brought on by Red camera.

Now I will be the first to say that even RED is playing it safe and though it appears it is driving technology forward…it could have been more radical. How much they are in the corporate game, who knows…but they are what Apple computer used to represent – change and innovation. (over the years I have watched an increase in the decline in quality from Apple…ironically it has always been there, but the apple fan boy in me, as well as others, overlooked it due to the other cool things it has…well no more…they are as greedy as the next guy. ;)

I can go on and on…but in the end of the day, lets not kid ourselves that Sony will be out of the DSLR game…again, they supply chips to both camps for various purposes. (video or still photography.)
Kind of like our politics in America, it says its different, but is all the same at the end of the day. lol

Well Ill leave that for you guys/gals to think about.

So, the point is…enjoy what you have.
If you want something now, go for it…if canon comes out with what its claimed is coming for a cheap price..cool. But things keep moving and shifting.
IF anything to get more money from the consumer.

Now things moving isnt bad, but when its not for the sake of progress, but the obvious, “how could they have missed that” – “wow they almost leaped frogged, but this one feature”…come on…how is it that we have such a coincidence that always there is that “one feature” missing.

With sony its the good RAW, but darn it…they just cant get that JPG right despite that Nikon has figured out a way to use Sonys own chips to get them better.
(And nikon doesnt even have experience outside of still photography into video like Sony has.)

This really gives you a lot to think about.
Had I a billion or so $$$, I would show you guys what revolution is…and I would try my best to allow a mount for your Nikon and CAnon lenses, etc. ;)

Peace

City size U.F.O. in Hungary – Photos (What is it? You decide)

September 1, 2008

Please Read this carefully before responding or looking at photos

update
ATS (Above Top Secret – forums) user member Internos has done me a huge favor by helping to animate the pics for me.
Check it out – scroll until you see the animated pic
Thanks again Internos!

2nd update
Close up underneath ’space object/craft’
This is a crop…no photo retouching – see flickr for uncropped original.

Closing close up
This is a crop…no photo retouching – see flickr for uncropped original.

Note: This is from 2nd night of photo taking…
Take note of additional comments I made concerning the ‘almost black sky’ in the thread I made at:
ATS/Above Top Secret Forums

Update 3

This takes the cake…Colored Metallic space craft headed toward the ‘mothership’ being discussed.
This is only a crop…no image manipulation…the original uncropped file is on the same page with more grey ships toward the bottom.

The ‘mother ship’ which Im going to call it now – I would strongly advise those who have not read, to read all the info and view all the pics and animated pics first to catch up. -
But the ‘mother ship’ has slits and dots that light up in colors and also are grey when not lit up.

These metallic space ships are grey and blue and orange in the photo.
They are all headed toward the ‘mother ship’ – see where they are facing.
So the colors could be useful for docking purposes.

Note: They all have the same form.
At first glance they look like space rock…but they have the exact same form…face the exact same direction…and if you look close enough at the blue one, you will see its metallic like.
Also you will see what looks like a round bluish/blackish window popping out bug like.
Infact the craft are bug like. – Look closely at all the details…then look again. ;)

Intro
I will try to be as clear and detailed as possible.
Again, please read the details carefully before looking at photos and responding.

Lights in the night sky
Is it a bird? Is it a plane?
No its probably a satellite – or so some may initially have thought upon first seeing this.

The problem seems that we dont look up to the sky much – and when we do, we automatically label what it is we think we see. No one actually ‘looks’.

Well last night, I not only looked, but took a series of photos.

Untouched Photos
At my flickr account I have a series of 6, untouched photos.
I took it straight from the camera and uploaded the files.
You can see the meta data file information from the camera as verification.

I also have some additional shots I will talk about toward the end of the post.

About the photos
At first glance you will see a series of shots that look like a bunch of lights.
One larger light that is about star size, and then a bunch of small speck lights surrounding it.

At first it will seem these are separate.

The light specks have different colors. You should be able to see green, blue, etc.
The large light, at one point, flashed a series of colors matching that of the colors of the specs around it.

I tried to get a pic of it flashing colors, or rather of a color other than the white you see – but it did not do it again that I saw. Which is no biggy for the overall picture of things.

Unified Movement
I will ask if someone will take the 6 files and make an animated gif out of them and post it for us to see.

Without looking at the pics, one after another in sequence, the pictures at first glance would seem underwhelminging.
You could do this, like I did, by opening it an a pdf viewer and clicking through the sequence. (I did this on the mac with the large photos and it was amazing)

Keep in mind that there is a roof top at the bottom of the pictures in which you can use as a reference point.

And to see the group of speck lights, moving the same speed, and distance, as the larger light – is quite amazing. Its as if its one large craft.

One large craft
Its after this last statement that it seems this thing is actually connected.

If you look at the picture that says ‘underside’ (or really any of the photos, close up, of the brightest light) you will see small grey like box beside the big light.

When you pan over, further away from the light you will see that same grey box where it should be black sky.

When you look further you will begin to notice that this ‘grey box’ is the source for the speck lights. Some of them are on…some off.

The lights
So some of the lights were on and others turned off.
At one point the light in the middle flashed the colors of the specs…sorry no video and no pic of a different color. But again, at this point, its irrelevant against the backdrop of everything else.

The point is that the source from these lights seem to come form the grey box form to the right of the main light…and again that form can be found inbetween the speck lights and large light.

Now identify
At this point I have described the photos.
I did not, as of yet, edit the photos to show this.
At this point I will leave it up to you guys to do it – though I may eventually do it myself.

My point was to provide the unedited photos, and I am a bit excited, so I wanted to go ahead and post this.

Again, it may appear boring at first, but more interesting as you look and analyze the photos. And as more details are brought up, (i.e. crops of the grey box by the light and located away from the light, as well as it being the speck light source) as well as an animated gif of a huge shape of lights moving the same speed and distance in the sky – with the roof as a reference point to size…to show this thing must be big. (and again must be one vessel to move like that. And again the speck lights make sense in light of all the other things mentioned above.)

extra note about photos
It was not handheld – nor do I have a tripod.
- I propped it up on a ’stool’ on the window seal, (see note about this below), with a small cardboard box to help the camera point up.
* it was not a reflection of light in the window. Look at the rooftop in the background and see the camera was in the same place and the lights moved. You will tell that the lights actually reflect on the object its coming from.

All lights inside were off.

- I used the 10 second timer as to get the clearest shot possible.
No camera shake by hitting the shutter button with my hand.
* If the roof is slightly out of line, its because it was not locked in a tripod – but Im sure most will agree its pretty consistent in placement.

- Some will laugh when they see the data from the camera, but it appears I had it in portrait mode. Not on purpose, but I was getting my shots…this is what counted.

- I did auto focus and then turned it off for each shot.
The camera is picky about not taking pictures if not totally focused in – and it doesnt focus in well on star like object in the sky. And with my eye sight I did not want to risk manual focus.

Now for the link
Again, I wish this could be viewed in a series. (overlap where you can see the movement) Again, hoping someone can do an animated gif with people remembering to check out the roof top in the background to get a sense of how huge this thing is.

Flickr even has the series backwards starting with the 6th photo. (So if someone makes an animated gif, careful of sequence, and thanks ahead of time.)

Here they are: Photos
When you go to flickr look at the full image - its to small to see anything in thumbnail mode. (note: just checked the file on my computer, and it appears that flickr isnt displaying the full size image there…but the link I just gave should be big enough…anyway.)

p.s. – Open Links below in Tabs and click through them to see the movement
Note: the lights all slant in the same direction…the spec light and the large light as if the underside of one large ship
Any blur to the light or stretching is the movement of the ship while being photographed.

Here are the links directly to the large images of the 6 sequence.
(Again, if someone can and wants to make an animated gif of them for this thread, it would be great.)

It totally is amazing to see the series of small lights surrounding the bigger one, moving in the same speed and keeping the same distance. (i.e., its part of the same craft.)

And to see the rooftop in the pic as a reference point to size is cool to I think.

Again the details are in the above post of what to look for – based on what I observed after analyzing the pics.

1of6
2of6
3of6
4of6
5of6
6of6

Again, if you can watch these in sequence to see the movement – simply amazing.
You can do this buy opening the above links in Tabs and then clicking through..

Peace
